About our Rocks | Limestone

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the mineral calcite. Like most other sedimentary rocks, limestone is composed of grains, which are mostly skeletal fragments of marine organisms.

Limestone has been a very popular building block since Egyptian times, as it is hard, durable, and typically occurs in easily accessible surface exposures. Many structures that were designed to survive the ages are made of limestone. From castles to public buildings such as courthouses and government buildings throughout the world are constructed with this stone.

Egyptian limestone is readily available and relatively easy to cut into slabs, tiles, or more elaborate custom-cut pieces. Its long-lasting qualities, including its ability to stand up well to exposure make it an ideal building material both inside and outside.
